Valrico Lake was first referred to as "Long Pond," and a number of cotton plantations continued to exist up until the Civil War. Later, various dairy farms, nurseries, turpentine stills, and saw mills were established. The region was also well known for its citrus crops, with almost 31,000 acres of groves. By 1915, a rural mail route was established by the local government. A golf course was planned and in 1916, a bank and large civic building were constructed out of clay that was found in the area. The original community of Valrico was built around a triangular park in the center of town. Today, the park stands as a memorial to W.F. Miller, one of the town´s founders.
