MacDill Air Force Base Today
Today, MacDill Air Force Base serves an important role in homeland security. Two of the auxiliary fields previously operated by the Army Air Corps/Army Air Force now serve as the Tampa International Airport and the St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport. In 1988, Tampa once again flourished with the city's development of New Tampa, an area that encompasses 24 square miles between I-275 and I-75. New Tampa is boarded by the University of South Florida to the south, Wesley Chapel to the North, Lutz to the west, and Morris Bridge Road to the east. New Tampa has seen quite a bit of development and offers single-family homes, condominiums, and townhouses.
